Survey of conditions for artificial aurora experiments at EISCAT Tromsø using dynasonde data

چکیده
We report a brief survey on conditions for artificial aurora optical experiments in F region heating with O-mode at the EISCAT Tromsø site using dynasonde data from 2000 to 2017. The results obtained in our survey indicate the following: The possible conditions for conducting artificial aurora experiments are concentrated in twilight hours in both evening and morning, compared with late-night hours; the possible conditions appear in fall, winter, and spring, while there is no chance in summer, and the month-to-month variation among fall, winter, and spring is not clear. The yearto-year variation is well correlated with the solar cycle, and experiments during the solar minimum would be almost hopeless. These findings are useful for planning future artificial aurora optical experiments.

Coordinated optical and EISCAT observations of black aurora
[1] An image intensified video camera was used in conjunction with the EISCAT radar in Tromsø, Norway, for detailed studies of non-sheared black aurora on March 5, 2002. While it is known that a downward field-aligned current will decrease the ionospheric plasma density, any measurable effect will depend on the noise-level in the density measurements and the background density. The results show...
متن کاملFeasibility study on Generalized-Aurora Computed Tomography
Aurora Computed Tomography (ACT) is a method for retrieving the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution of the volume emission rate from monochromatic auroral images obtained simultaneously by a multi-point camera network. We extend this method to a Generalized-Aurora Computed Tomography (G-ACT) that reconstructs the energy and spatial distributions of precipitating electrons from multi-instrument...
متن کاملCombined optical, EISCAT and magnetic observations of the omega bands/Ps6 pulsations and an auroral torch in the late morning hours: a case study
We present here the results of multi-instrument observations of auroral torch and Ps6 magnetic pulsations, which are assumed to be the magnetic signature of the spatially periodic optical auroras known as omega bands. Data from TV and ASC cameras in Barentsburg and Ny Ålesund, EISCAT radars in Longyearbyen and Tromsø, as well as IMAGE network were used in this study. The auroral phenomenon whic...
متن کاملEstimating the Field-parallel Scale Length of Artificial F-region Striations by Means of Hf Radar Backscatter
We used the HF coherent scatter radar at Hankasalmi, Finland to observe striations generated by the EISCAT HF facility near Tromsø, Norway. By sweeping the radar frequency we can estimate the field-parallel scale length of the irregularities, since ionospheric refraction brings rays at higher frequencies to orthogonality with the geomagnetic field (necessary to receive backscatter) at higher al...
متن کاملOn the relationship between auroral absorption, electrojet currents and plasma convection
In this study, the relationship between auroral absorption, electrojet currents, and ionospheric plasma convection velocity is investigated using a series of new methods where temporal correlations are calculated and analysed for different events and MLT sectors. We employ cosmic noise absorption (CNA) observations obtained by the Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies (IRIS) system in Kilpis...
